Hi Hariet,
Thanks for your questions.
I'm glad to help with your concerns.
Pain at the tailbone is called coccygodynia, and is a result of instability of the joints of the tailbone.
Causes of coccygodynia include trauma to the back, obesity, infections, or inflammation of the joints' shock-absorbing cushion called bursa.
To relieve the pain, here are a few things you should note:
1. Avoid sitting on hard surfaces and use only soft seats.
2. Use over-the-counter pain medications such as
ibuprofen.
3. Use stool softeners such as docusate and drink lots of water to prevent
constipation which could exacerbate the pain.
4. Sitz bath which involves sitting over a tub of water helps alleviate the pain.
If these do not relieve the pain, i suggest you visit an orthopedic surgeon, who treats diseases of bones and joints for advanced treatment options such as a procedure called
coccygectomy where a part of the tailbone is removed.
I hope i have been able to answer your questions. I'd be glad to hear from you if you got more questions.
Best wishes.
